7 Guitar Modes Backing Tracks in A

This volume is about guitar modes. We talked before about the importance of using modes when it comes to soloing or improvisation on guitar.

Each mode can be treated as a unique independent scale. Then modal music theory can be used to relate each mode with other relative modes within the same parent scale.

To think about each mode as an independent scale, we need to stop looking at relative modes for now and start looking at them in a parallel approach.

To make things clear if we are in the key or C Major, its relative minor is A Aeolian which is on the 6th degree, F Lydian on the 4th and G Mixolydian on the 5th. But if we want to approach A Aeolian from a parallel perspective we need to look at all other 7 modes starting from the same note A

In this case we have 7 parallel modes, each of them sound unique and has a certain structure or formula of tones and semi tones

7 parallel modes

  1. A Ionian
  2. A Dorian
  3. A Phrygian
  4. A Lydian
  5. A Mixolydian
  6. A Aeolian
  7. A Locrian

Playing along with the 7 backing tracks of this volume will let you know the chords used to play each one of these 7 modes. Since chords are different then scales much be different and unique with each of the 7 modes jam tracks. This is the main purpose of this volume, to show you how each mode looks and how unique it sounds in a musical context rather than playing along with drones or pedal tones.

In this backing tracks volume, we have 7 extended tracks 10+ minutes each. That will help your ears stay focused for enough time to internalize the unique sound of each mode. You need to understand that realization of that unique sound will never happen over night, but be sure that the more you play along with these tracks it will happen automatically. That will open new doors of creativity and tons of joy while playing on guitar (or any other instrument). The pleasure of playing music comes from a deep need inside each one to express themselves. Music modes is one way that will help you express more of your musical ideas, feelings and philosophy.

Next approach we will use to learn new approaches to apply the music modes on guitar based on looking at all 7 modes in two groups.

Major and minor. This approach is based on the sound of each group which is based mainly on the 3rd degree of each mode. If the 3rd degree is major (not augmented/raised or diminished/flattened/lowered) then it is a major mode. Similarly if the 3rd degree is flattened/lowered then it is a minor mode.
